It was rainy today when I got home from work and the last thing I wanted to do was stay inside all night. When I got in the house I could just tell it had been one of those days.
Toys were spread throughout the house like a tornado had come through. The boys were bickering, and mama was looking exhausted from a late night and a long day trapped in the house. I had to think quickly or risk getting sucked into the force field of grumpy attitudes that awaited me today.
I decided on this dreary day that I would give LuLu a break for a few hours and take the boys to the local Home Depot. James has been saving his dollars in his new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle wallet to buy himself a tool, and I can always get lost in the tool isle. So we get packed into the truck and make our way into town.
On our way there, we hit one of those after winter pot holes and instantly I can tell something bad had happened. We pull over to see that our tire was ruined! Needless to say, I was extremely unhappy. It was raining, I have both boys with me, and now I have to change my tire. Long story short….. my spare was flat too!
Now what? I decided to call LuLu and have her come get the boys and while I waited on her I called a towing service. I’m angry about the situation, the boys are angry because we are stranded and all we can do is wait. Little did I know, the evening was actually about to get better.
I have to give major props to the local towing company that came to our rescue (www.towingcantoncars.com). Thanks fellas’ for making the experience enjoyable. To my surprise, when the tow truck showed up, the boys couldn’t have been any more excited! The rain had slowed down to a light drizzle, so the boys got to get out of the truck and “help” the driver winch our truck up on the flat bed.
Looking back, I see that it has been a while since I have posted on my blog. That must mean that the hot summer sun has been around and by the end of the day I am either exhausted, or still at work. Just to catch up quickly, summer has been great so far. The boys are swimming daily, getting bronzed by the sunshine. They are handsome with their little tanned bodies running around outside as they play with every toy imaginable. They love being outside and getting dirt on them from head to toe. I love sitting and watching them entertain each other, with their imaginations running wild. They come up with some of the craziest stories to talk about with each other as they are playing.
The hot weather is finally here in Northeast Ohio. June has arrived and it’s time to begin the summer activities that we have been waiting all winter to enjoy. It’s not easy waiting on summer to get here. Winters are long and cold. You are basically trapped inside the house for about six months. It can be rather depressing as the winter months loom on and on. But, those months are behind us and it is now time to get out and enjoy the warm sun and long days.
We had the chance to go away for the a few days. I had a three day weekend, so we decided to drive South for two and a half hours to visit LuLu’s mom and dad. We make the trip a few times a year and the boys were more than excited. 250+ acres of mountainous land where the boys could ride on four wheelers, play in the creek, have campfires, and basically just get away from the grind of everyday life.
Okay I’m back. I can’t believe it has been a week since my last post. I feel like my world has been turned completely upside down this week. I love having consistency in life and this week has been anything but that. I willingly took a new position at work about one month ago. My previous job was day shift for the last 6 years and now I am working a swing shift. This week being my first week working afternoon shift. My schedule this week has been 3p-11p. It feels like the longest week ever. Tomorrow is my last day of afternoons for five weeks and I can’t wait to be done with it.
The boys and I have been getting to spend a lot more time together lately. I took a new position at work a few weeks ago which has allowed me to be home more. Before I was working a LOT of overtime hours and now it has probably been cut in half. It may result in a little less money in the long run, but now I don’t have to expect my phone to ring 3-4 times a week.
So what have I been doing with all my free time? Well… you never have free time with kids. So my time away from work has been spent with my boys.
LuLu has started a business introducing essential oils to people. Our family has been using them for about four years (since James was born). I wasn’t too sure about them at first, but the proof is in the pudding. It is rare for one of us to get sick. I have watched the oils do amazing things first hand and now I am a firm believer in them. She has been getting busier on nights and weekends as her business grows, and this weekend she was not home much.
So I’m sitting around tonight in front of this computer screen, asking myself a question that seems to have no constant answer…
What is happiness?!?
For some odd reason I like to turn to wikipedia a lot for answers to random questions. After reading their definition of happiness, I seem to be more confused than ever about what makes us “happy.” Why is it that in the winter you would be happy if it was summer time, but when summer gets here it’s too hot? Or you would be happy if you could make more money at work, but when you find a new job that pays great money, your unhappy because you have to put in a lot of hours to make that money?
My boys are 16 months apart, which is relatively close in age and we get asked all the time if they are twins. I can see how that mistake happens as they have a lot of the same features. Sandy blond hair that is bleach white in the summer and matches their tan skin perfectly. They look as though they could be beach bums. They both have their mama’s dark brown eyes and big smile. But outside of looks they can be completely different.
James is his mother through and through. He has never met a stranger. It doesn’t matter the age, gender, or race, when he sees someone he HAS to know everything about them. He is a very loving person with a big heart. He loves to work. No matter what you are doing he needs to “help”. Santa got him a snow shovel for Christmas and it was his favorite present. This winter I was plowing the driveway with the tractor and my little buddy would not get on with me because he kept saying that he had to shovel. I laugh about that! I really feel that he will do something special with his life someday.
When we talked about having children, LuLu and I were positive that we would be having girls. Her mother has three sisters and her father has two sisters. My dad was in a household with five sisters. However my mom does have three brothers compared to only one sister. Lulu has three sisters and I have two. Even between all of our nieces and nephews it was girls 7, boys 2. So you can see why we felt that the odds were against us.
We have always been terrible betting people.
To be in a household raising two boys is absolutely unthinkable!
Boys are crazy. What makes them so different from girls? Most girls seem to want to sit and play for hours on end with their toys or dolls. The only thing my boys do for hours is treat me like a walking jungle gym. It’s not very often that I can walk through the room without at least one of them jumping on my leg and holding on for a ride, or trying to tackle me. The one that usually surprises me the most is when I do try to lay or sit on the floor and just when I’m least expecting it, one of the boys jumps on me.
Just thought I would try to catch you up to speed.
My wife “LuLu” and I have known each other since we were 5 years old. We went to school together from kindergarten thru graduation. Something happened when we were juniors in high school….. it was like I had noticed her for the first time. We had always been in the same classes and somewhat friends, but magic was in the air that year and I knew that I needed to date Ms. LuLu! Long story short, after about a year of bothering her, she finally decided that she would date me.
Life was good!!
Fast forward six more years and we were on an island getting married. Life couldn’t have been any better. We were living it up. Building a house, both working hard, good friends and family. A few years passed and we were starting to watch our sisters having babies and our friends having babies. We were kind of in that moment where it was like…. now what?
Let’s have a baby!
